GOLF CORPORATE HOSPITALITY
GOLF IN THE UK
Golf as
we know it today originated in the 15th Century on the East Coast of
Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife. The Gentlemen Golfers of Leith was
the first club formed in 1744, and they drafted some basic rules of
golf. The club was later renamed the Honourable Company of Edinburgh
Golfers, situated at the now world famous Muirfield Golf Course.
The first reference to golf in the historic town of St Andrews was
in 1552. In 1764 the 18-hole golf course was built, which has since
become the standard for golf worldwide. The famous clubhouse was
erected in 1854, and King William had previously bestowed upon the
club the name, 'Royal & Ancient'. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of
St Andrews (R & A) became the premier golf club because of its fine
course, the publication of its rules, its royal patronage, and its
promotion of the game of golf as a proper sport.
The Open Golf Championship is golf's oldest (1860) and most
prestigious championship. It is an event steeped in tradition and
heritage and no golfer can consider himself to be truly great until
he has won The Open. The golfer must overcome the weather and the
topography to be victorious. The Open golf championship is
indisputably special.
There are four main championships in golf, classified as 'the
Majors'. In addition to The Open there is the US Open, the US
Masters, and the US PGA. The US Open began in 1895 and although
sentiment has catapulted the Masters above it, it remains a greater
challenge to the golfer. The difficulty of many of the golf courses
has helped promote the US PGA as one of the most challenging golf
tournaments in the world. The US Masters, played at Augusta
National, is the most prestigious golf tournament in the USA, and is
an integral part of golf's heritage.
Despite the four 'Majors' the highlight of the golfing calendar
every two years is the Ryder Cup, fought between USA and Europe,
which brings forth great patriotism.
